When people find out that I was a Pararescueman in the Air Force, they automatically assume that I have some secret to motivation. I am going to let you in on a secret that every special operator already knows. In fact, anybody who has already achieved his goals knows this secret. Motivation is not the answer to realizing your dreams. Hard work is the only way to achieve your goals and dreams. Sometimes you have to do things that you absolutely do not want to. You do these things anyway because they are part of the required steps to reach the goals that you have previously set. If you want to see the famous monastery al-Deir in Petra, Jordan, you have to climb the 850 steps up from the road whether you want to or not. Each and every step has to be crossed in order to set your eyes on al-Deir. Motivation is the igniter that gets a person to set his sights on a new goal; hard work is the vehicle that ensures the person reaches that goal.
When people first come to gyms in scottsdale az, the first question we ask is “What brought you to Pulse Fitness today?” The intent is to find out what a person’s goals are. We then ask why these goals are important to the individual. Finally, we ask, on a scale from 1 to 10, how committed is the individual. Most people say they are a 10 with some shooting slightly lower at 8 or 9. The truth for most people is that their motivation, at that point in time, is a 10, while their commitment is closer to a 3. Motivation made them walk through the door at Pulse Fitness; a commitment has not yet been made or proven. The commitment will be shown in the amount of hard work that the person puts in over the course of their time at Pulse Fitness. I can guarantee you that your motivation is going to drop considerably lower than 10 when you have to get up at 5:00 a.m. to make it to the 6:00 a.m. training session when you are used to getting up at 7:00. The only way that a person is going to make it to the 6:00 a.m. training session every day is through dedication and hard work.
Making it to the gym is just one step towards a person’s fitness goals. Once an individual steps foot in the gym, they will have to put in a high degree of effort in order for the workout to be effective. The individual will then have to show up to the next training session and put in another hour of hard work. This hard work will have to be put in on a consistent basis, regardless of the degree of motivation, in order for the individual to reach his goals. Going through the motions is not going to cut it. Working hard in the gym is what is necessary for the achievement of one’s fitness goals.
I always tell people that in order for one to be successful in his endeavors, he has to be willing to go all in. Nobody ever did anything half-way and was successful. Motivation is a blessing that can do great things and set you on a great path. Motivation may light the fire, but fires don’t burn forever. You must put in the work required if you want to reach your goals, even when the fire is out. To put it as simply as I can, motivation believes, hard work achieves.
